I know for Amarok it was mostly US students and European time zones. We're only like 6 hours apart, the effective thing to do is just to wake up a bit early and go to bed a bit early. This is what I did during my GSoC's.

However I know some of the students were staying up really late. This actually isn't effective at all since Europe starts waking up in the middle of the night (meaning the student is awake during the entire europe-is-asleep-period).

In short, I think this is the fault of the students involved and there's not much we can do about it! :P

Wow, I got thanked twice in your blog post (as being part of the local team and by signing your notebook). I'm glad you enjoyed Akademy! It's good to hear that all the hard work payed off :-)

When matching students with mentors according to timezone, make sure you ask them (both the students and the mentors) for their effective timezone, not the one they're supposedly living in. For example, I live in Europe (Austria to be precise), but I'm notorious for living mostly on US time (though these days my sleeping schedules are even more chaotic).
